   Madeiran Buzzard

Birds are the most conspicous animals in the area of Aviceiros and the Madeiran Buzzard (Buteo buteo harterti)
is perhaps the most obvious bird around due to its size and
constant presence.

Madeira has 43 species of breeding birds and a list of
about 330 recorded migratory ones.

There are 2 endemic birds: The Trocaz Pigeon (Columba
trocaz
) which you can see near Montado dos Aviceiros, in
association with the Laurisilva Forest, and the very rare
seabird Zino'Petrel (Pterodroma madeira). This one, you
can spot at sea in the right season and with some luck.

Around the Montado you can see a great number of the
island's landbird species. Birdwatchers are very welcome
and they will find much information on the birds of Madeira.

Apart from birds there are bats and skinks. Many butterflies can be seen throughout the year belonging to about 16 species existing in the island.

Two examples of introduced especies that inhabit the Montado dos Avicieros, the pheasant and the peacock.
